Apple co-founder defends new iPhone in Valencia

Steve Wozniak, cofounder of Apple, has been responsible for inaugurating the Campus Party in Valencia this year. In a press conference held yesterday, the founder talked about the new iPhone in April and removed all importance to the bad image that can be causing Apple about the problem of coverage in the U.S. and the antenna.

According to Wozniak, the problem is not so serious and just being “raised by people who want to end up with the huge success of Apple.” With these statements shows that it has no bad relationship with the company and less with Steve Jobs, the previously “used to be better

Apple releases second beta of iOS 4.1 to developers

Apple on Tuesday evening released to its iPhone developer community the second private beta of iOS 4.1, a much anticipated update to the company’s mobile operating system aimed at remedying a number of outstanding issues with the new iPhone 4.

The software, labeled iOS 4.1 beta 2 build 8B509b, was made available in five distinct distributions, one each for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod touch 3rd generation and iPod touch 2nd generation.

Most critically, the release is expected to include a fix for proximity sensor malfunctions on the iPhone 4. From the onset, users have found that the touchscreen on their iPhone 4 will sometimes activate while on a call, resulting in accidentally pressed buttons that can place a call on hold or even end it and dial a different number almost instantaneously.

During a press conference two weeks ago, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said the company is aware of problems with the proximity sensor on the iPhone 4 and added that his team was working on a software fix that is expected to be included in the next iOS update — presumably iOS 4.1.

The first beta of iOS 4.1, released to developers a couple of weeks ago, included a new version of the iPhone’s modem firmware (02.07.01), the ability to add FaceTime numbers as phone favorites, a remodeled version of GameCenter, and cosmetic changes to the camera app that reposition the flash and camera swap buttons when handset it shifted to landscape mode.

Update: The Latest Scoop On iPhone 4 Jailbreak

Everyone on the net seems to be asking the same question, when will the jailbreak for iphone 4 come out. Here is the latest scoop for those who don’t follow closely and for those who just can’t stop refreshing their browsers obsessively waiting for the jailbreak.

Musclenerd a member of the dev team recently tweeted that the jailbreak was not to be released last Sunday like everyone assumed. He also stated a very good reason as to why they haven’t released a the jailbreak yet.

As you can see the dev team actually cares about releasing a stable and 100% working jailbreak. From the picture above, we all now know one reason the jailbreak isn’t released and that is the iphone 4′s main feature which is facetime video calling gets broken (I read it disappears). We also can’t forget the other important apps whatever they may be musclenerd mentions.

A good thing is that planetbeing another dev team member stated that the iphone 4 unlock they have works well on the latest firmware 4.0.1 for the iphone 4. To everyone wondering about the release date, lets just say they are working hard on it and they will release it when ready.

Thanks to comex for tweeting, we now have a better understanding of when the jailbreak will be released. As you can see above comex is not waiting for a certain day to release his jailbreak. It is plain and simple, comex will release the jailbreak when it is ready. Whether it be tomorrow or a few weeks from now, when the jailbreak is 100% it will be out

Apple’s Official Response to Jailbreak Ruling

Apple has issued an official response to the ruling handed down by the Library of Congress on the matter of jailbreaking the iPhone. Today after much deliberation a final decision was announced by the governing body on issues of copyright infringement. The ruling goes as follows; an exception has been made to the DMCA that now allows you to legally jailbreak your iPhone in order to install unapproved applications and to unlock the device so the phone can be used with another service carrier.

CultofMac received a brief statement on the record from an Apple spokeswoman. Due to the legal nature of the issue she was unable to go into much detail:

“Apple’s goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience. As we’ve said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably.”

Apple to sell unlocked iPhone 4 in Canada starting at $659

Canadians looking to score an unlocked iPhone on Friday may have to pay dearly for the carrier-free convenience being offered by Apple retail stores. According to CBC news, pricing for the unlocked version of the iPhone 4 will start at $659 — for the lower capacity 16 GB version — and climb up to $779 for the 32 GB version. If you can’t stomach the high cost of SIM-free ownership, you could always sell your soul and sign a contract with Bell, Telus, or Rogers when the handset makes its debut on July 30th.

Antenna problem

Apple’s move, though, picks up on an attempt earlier this year by Google to sell its high-profile Nexus One smartphone directly to customers, first in the United States and then in Canada.

Google sold the device — which was unlocked, contract-free and worked on the big three’s networks — through a website, but the company lacked a retail presence. Google recently abandoned the effort on poor sales.

Apple will also have to contend with the iPhone 4′s well-publicized antenna problem when it goes on sale in Canada, as well as 16 other countries, on Friday.

After its U.S. launch earlier this summer, a number of influential technology media including the non-profit Consumer Reports magazine found the iPhone 4 loses its reception when held in a certain way.

AT&T Begins Fixing Slow Upload Speeds

An AT&T spokesperson has said the company began addressing an issue with upload speeds and should it should be resolved in 2-3 weeks, according to a Bloomberg report.

Mark Siegel, an AT&T spokesman, said in an e-mail the Dallas-based carrier expected the issue to be resolved within two to three weeks. AT&T said earlier this month that fewer than 2 percent of its wireless customers were affected. Customers were experiencing slow responses when sending data such as photos or e-mail from their devices, Alcatel-Lucent said earlier this month.

No word on how much the fix will cost. Bloomberg notes that two percent of AT&’s 90.1 million wireless subscribers works out to 1.8 million people affected.

Apple to launch iPhone 4 in 17 more countries Friday

The international expansion of the iPhone 4 continues this week, as Apple’s latest handset will launch in 17 new countries on Friday, July 30.

Beginning this Friday, customers can purchase iPhone 4 in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. The handset will be available for purchase through Apple’s retail and online stores, as well as Apple Authorized Resellers.

The iPhone 4 first launched in the U.S., France, Germany, Japan and the U.K. in late June. It is available for a suggested retail price of $199 (U.S.) for the 16GB model and $299 (U.S.) for the 32GB model. Apple said its latest smartphone will roll out to many more countries later this year, and availability and local pricing will be announced at a later date.

Apple’s rollout of the iPhone 4 represents the fastest international handset ramp-up yet for the Cupertino, Calif., company. It is expected to launch the iPhone 4 in 87 total countries by the end of September, a pace much faster than many who closely watch the company expected.

Though Apple is an American company, the international market has come to play a very important role for the iPhone maker. During last week’s quarterly earnings conference call, Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said the company’s overseas numbers were “absolutely killer.”

Apple’s international expansion of the iPhone 4 on Friday will come just a week after one of the company’s other blockbuster portable devices, the iPad, also saw its overseas market presence increase. Last Friday the iPad went on sale in nine new countries, many of which will also receive the iPhone 4 this week: Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore.
