New Features TinyUmbrella Update

Semaphore the developer of TinyUmbrella is working on a huge update for his famous program that lets you backup your shsh blobs. TinyUmbrella frees you from Apples controlling actions and lets you restore to any firmware you want if you use the program correctly. For a list of upcoming features:

● Device History: TinyUmbrella will remember device information of devices that have connected so that saving SHSH’s for those devices in the future no longer requires you to connect the device.
● Save All SHSH’s Available “On-File” at Cydia: TinyUmbrella will now automatically check Cydia for ALL SHSHs for the connected device (or device from history :) )
● TinyUmbrella will also help you detect what application is running on your computer that is taking up port 80 and will give you the option to kill that application. This should help many of you that don’t know what application may be listening on port 80 (ie. Skype)
● TinyUmbrella will also tell you what firmware versions you can safely downgrade or restore to whenever you connect the device (or select a device from history)
● TinyUmbrella will be sporting a cleaner UI based on some of the great suggestions from @chpwn (a friend and fellow chronic dev team associate)
● Support for PowerPC and more stable runtime for folks having problems running TinyUmbrella for odd and various reasons.

Long term plans include:

● Activation Support: I’ve started looking into the way the phone requests (and obtains) activation from apple’s servers. I’m confident I can duplicate this process but I have more investigation as the the process is incredibly complicated.
● Full Restore Support without iTunes: I’m looking at implementing my own complete restore mechanism. I have not decided if I’ll directly use @p0sixninja’s libirestore or whether I’ll try to do something that hasn’t been done before… ie in java :)

Jailbreakme v2.0

Jailbreakme v2.0 was a great success, and it’s provided a nice leveling point for all jailbreakers and unlockers on all devices at firmware versions less than 4.0.2/3.2.2.  We hope that everybody ever interested in jailbreaks or unlocks was able to join in on the jailbreakme bonanza.  Those of you who had Cydia capture your SHSH blobs, or those of you who captured them locally, will always be able to benefit from the jailbreakme.com v2.0 release. Congratulations!

Now it’s a few weeks later, and Apple has closed the jailbreakme.com hole.  They’re shipping devices with FW 4.0.2/3.2.2, impervious to this particular jailbreak.  So now, people will begin to ask: will there be a jailbreak for devices that shipped with 4.0.2/3.2.2, out of the box?

No, there won’t be.  FW 4.0.2/3.2.2 was *only* released to fix the jailbreakme hole.  With FW 4.1 still in its beta stages, it makes no sense to escalate the “cat & mouse” with Apple for FW updates that only fix the jailbreak holes. To quote WOPR, “the only winning move is not to play”.

If the cat & mouse game escalates too quickly, especially during beta FW periods, nobody but Apple benefits.  For this reason, there won’t be a 4.0.2/3.2.2 jailbreak specifically during the period where 4.0.2/3.2.2 is the latest public release.  At best, some future 4.1x FW jailbreak *may* be compatible with 4.0.2/3.2.2 (but don’t count on that).

If any of this is confusing, please ask below in our comments section!

P.S.: For those of you with iPhone3G or iPod Touch 2G(not MC version), it’s true you can always use redsn0w to jailbreak your 4.x devices.   Don’t let that dilute the above message, though :)

Temporary Fix For Gowalla & Jailbroken iPhones

When the jailbreak came out for the iPhone 4 I was very excited. I was even more excited when a lot of my favorite jailbreak apps became available. Then I noticed Gowalla, an App Store app for check in to locations, had stopped working. When you opened the app it would just crash right away. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it just kept doing it. Eventually I found out it was a problem with having my iPhone jailbroken and specifically having Winterboard installed. Here’s a recent @reply from @gowalla:

@jkr801 Is your phone jailbroken? If you remove Winterboard, you should be set. The next update will likely include a workaround.

What’s good about this is there an update coming soon. Until then there’s a easy workaround. Just visit m.gowalla.com and then add it to your homescreen. It makes an icon and one of those sweet fullscreen web apps. Here’s some screenshots:

A quick shoutout and thanks to my buddy Justin shared with me about Gowalla’s mobile site. Just just recently switched to an iPhone 4 after a long time using BlackBerries. Congrats man! And thanks!

Tutorial: How to Downgrade from 4.0.2 to 4.0.1

Have you updated to version 4.0.2?

Too bad on your part (if you want to jailbreak), but here we have the solution to return to 4.0.1 on your iPhone 3G or iPhone in April and be able to Jailbreak.

Just need to have saved your servers SHSH in Cydia.

(Note: You can also download the 4.0 having the SHSH of that version)

We need:

1. iTunes 9.2 WindowsMac
2. Firmware 4.0.1 original: iPhone 3GS – iPhone 4
3. iRecovery v 1.3 WindowsMac
4. libUSB WindowsMac

1. Open Notepad as administrator

Now for the path C: | Windows | system32 | drivers | etc (| etc | mac) and open the hosts file, adding at the end this line:

74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

2. Copy iRecovery application on the desktop and install the library “libusb”.

3. You should put the iPhone in DFU mode, iTunes will display a warning “detected iPhone in recovery mode”

To put the iPhone in DFU, Turn Turn it off the computer and click the Home button and the power at the same time for 10 seconds after 10 seconds left to push the power button, but continue pressing the Home button, to appear in iTunes a message saying it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

4. From iTunes, select the ALT + Restore in iTunes on Mac or SHIFT + Restore in Windows and manually load the original 4.0.1 firmware.

5. During the restoration process, a window with error 1015, do not worry it is normal.

6. We click OK to close the error window and close iTunes.

7. Now open iRecovey in terminal or command prompt and type the following:

MAC

  • iRecovery -s
  • setenv auto-boot true
  • saveenv
  • fsboot
  • exit

Windows:

  • cd Desktop
  • ./iRecovery -s
  • setenv auto-boot true
  • saveenv
  • exit

8. Click the Home + Sleep buttons for a few seconds until your iPhone restarts

The iphone is already in 4.0.1 you can now activate, jailbreak with proven methods with Ultrasn0w release.

Guide:Jailbreak iOS 4.0.2 Firmware

All guides to jailbreak iOS 4.0.2 firmware on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3G and iPod Touch 3G, 2G (MC, non-MC) will be listed here. You can jailbreak iOS 4.0.2 on iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G (non-MC) using RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-5. For rest of the devices, a new jailbreak tool is required as iOS 4.0.2 has rendered JailbreakMe 2.0, the AIO jailbreak, useless.

PDF Patch Released To Fix iOS Vulnerability

As you may know the jailbreakme jailbreak uses a pdf exploit to execute code and take control of the device so that it can be jailbroken. Apple released a firmware update specifically to block the exploit but did not fix the vulnerability on the older ipod touch and iphone 1st gen.

A lot of old school users felt left out so saurik has created a fix for all i-devices and has released pdf patch in cydia. If your jailbroken and are not going to update it is recommended to install this patch immediately.

  • Open cydia tap, bottom right tap on search
  • search pdf patch and install, enjoy being safe thanks to Saurik.

Update #1: For those who know their way around the bash shell and dpkg, please try out this fix and send any pertinent feedback to @saurik.

iOS 4.0.2 is done, Blocks Jailbreak, Save Your ShSh’s Now

Now that we have the iphone 4 jailbreak along with it being an untethered jailbreak for all other i-devices it is very important for yout to save your shsh blobs. A lot of new people in the jailbreak scene don’t know what those are and its ok you don’t need to just save them. If your not jailbroken I recommend saving your shsh’s anyway so that if you ever want to jailbreak you can. This is urgent right now it is rumored a firmware update is coming today!

Your probably wondering what is all this shsh stuff. Basically whenever Apple releases a new firmware update for i-devices it doesn’t allow you to downgrade to old firmware versions. If you update to a new firmware and there is no jailbreak for it your stuck without, unless you have your shsh’s save. With your shsh’s saved you can downgrade to the old firmware version that is jailbreakable. Enough talk here is how to save shsh’s so get them whether your jailbroken or not:

  • Visit http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/
  • On right hand side choose and download either windows or osx program
  • Open TinyUmbrella and you will get a screen like the one above, click save my shsh
  • Your done now hang tight and DO NOT update your i-device when the new firmware drops.

Apple Releases iOS 4.0.2 [Don't Update]

Apple has released iOS 4.0.2 for the iPhone. Do not update your device until more details about the firmware are discovered.

It is VERY important that you have your SHSH blobs for 4.0 or 4.0.1 saved. Apple will stop signing 4.0.1 in just a few minutes/hours.

Follow one of these tutorials ASAP:
- Windows

It’s thought that the 4.0.2 update will patch the PDF vulnerability that comex used to perform his jailbreak.

Update:
Planetbeing tweets that Apple hasn’t bothered to patch the exploit for the first generation iPhone. Are you serious, Apple’s not going to patch the Safari remote execution on the first gen iPhone???!

Update 2:
Apple has posted a support document outlining the security issue that has been fixed.

A stack buffer overflow exists in FreeType’s handling of CFF opcodes. Viewing a PDF document with maliciously crafted embedded fonts may allow arbitrary code execution. This issue is addressed through improved bounds checking.

Update 3:
MuscleNerd notes that the baseband hasn’t been updated in 4.0.2. iPhone 4 baseband isn’t updated in 4.0.2, but ultrasn0w requires JB. 4.0.1 SHSH blobs will protect you from “oops” update
