Geohot is Back With a New Limera1n Jailbreak! [Update 2]

Geohot has suddenly appeared back on the jailbreak scene with a new bootrom exploit he is calling limera1n.

Geohot posted a picture on www.limera1n.com of four iDevices displaying the limera1n logo.

P0sixninja has since confirmed that it is real:

yes, the news about geohot is true, the day after we release ETA he decides he wants a piece of the #pie

and yes it is a different bootrom exploit, he wants us to use it in GP, but there’s no way we’ll make our ETA if we do

Greenpois0n was scheduled to be released on October 10th, at 10:10:10 GMT.

StealthBravo also tweeted: geohot’s return is no joke. He is back and is going to release limera1n unless someone talks him out of it.

Update:
P0sixninja has said that they will use Geohot’s exploit if they can implement it in time; however, they will not change the release date.

We are not changing our release date. If we can implement @geohots before 10/10 we will use that, otherwise we’re using ours. #roadblocks

Update 2:
MuscleNerd: As dramatic as geohot’s last-minute all-device JB is, still a shame that two bootrom holes will be burned at once.

Redsn0w For Windows Updated To Jailbreak iOS 4.1

The iPhone Dev Team has released an updated windows version of their popular redsn0w program used to jailbreak older i-devices on iOS 4.1. Until today Redsn0w was only available for mac.

Those with a pc can go download it over athttp://wikee.iphwn.org/howto:rsbeta. The download link is on the very bottom.

Be sure and read all instructions and every little detail before doing any jailbreaking on your iphone.

NOTE: Using redsn0w requires you to update to a stock apple firmware and if you use an unlock then you must wait for the dev teams pwnagetool which lets you update while preserving your baseband so you can unlock.

iPhone 4 Hardware Revision to Fix the Antennagate Coming by End of September?

Marco Quatorze, the director of Value Added Services of Telcel in Mexico, claims that Apple will push an iPhone 4 hardware revision (a redesigned antenna), by End of September, to fix the highly publicized Antenna issue.
rumors

The iPhone 4′s Antennagate controversy pushed Apple to hold a press conference where they blamed their signal bars calculation formula and also announced free cases for all iPhone 4 owners. Apple has already fixed the signal bars calculation formula in iOS 4.0.1 update and the free cases program is also expiring by end of September.

MacRumors reports that

According to Marco Quatorze, Telcel’s Director of Value Added Services, the iPhone 4 sold in Mexico will initially be the same hardware as that sold in the U.S. and elsewhere, with Apple offering a free case to address potential issues with antenna performance. But he also noted that as of September 30th, when the free case program expires, revised hardware without the reception issues will become available.

Before the case giveaway was announced, various reports indicated that Apple was working on a hardware fix for the issue. It’s unclear whether there is any truth to this statement or whether the Telcel’s director is simply assuming the hardware revision since Apple put September 30th expiry on its free iPhone 4 cases program.

HoDowngrading 4.0.2 to 4.0.1 Debunked, Not Possible Without ShSh’s

Notcom the creator of TinyUmbrella has finally cleared up a lot of misinterpretation regarding out of the box iphone’s with 4.0.2 firmware being able to downgrade. As you may know a lot of people are posting a how to guide on downgrading to 4.0.1 without shsh’s. Sorry to all but that is completely false.

Notcom explains it all on his blog and then some telling people what exactly is being done when doing this supposed firmware trick that lets you downgrade. More info after the break:

Below is what NotCom had to say about this whole situation:

There is much discussion on many blogs about a potential means of downgrading iOS 4.0.2 to 4.0.1 by simply changing a couple values in the buildmanifest.plist and copying all of the images from 4.0.1 into 4.0.2 and then deleting the files ending with 002. Following all of this, perform a DFU restore and somehow you will be on 4.0.1.

There is a perfectly logical explanation for all of this and I will lay out exactly what is happening and explain why it is working for the folks that are the lucky ones.

Let me get this out first.

  1. This is not a miracle, at least not in the sense you all hope for
  2. SHSHs are STILL required for any iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad, iPod Touch 3G, and iPod Touch 2G (MC Model)
  3. There is NO way around this… unfortunately this method included.

Let me start by explaining something very important. The buildmanifest is used by iTunes to build much of the TSS request that is used to obtain your SHSH for any given firmware revision. Unfortunately, the BuildNumber has no part to play in the request for SHSH. All that you ended up doing in following these directions is request 4.0.1 SHSH blobs. THAT IS ALL. Since every single one of you that got this to work changed your hosts file to point to Cydia, Cydia responded to the TSS request with an SHSH blob that was ALREADY “on-file”. There was no magic. There was no miracle, apart from the lucky break that your device had been put on Cydia’s SHSH request list at some time in the distant past.

That’s it in a nutshell folks. There was no amazing technique for bypassing Apple’s TSS. There was no amazing exploit that exists in DFU mode allowing for 4.0.2 -> 4.0.1 downgrading. It’s simple; Cydia had your SHSH because at sometime in the past either:

  • Someone saved your SHSH with that device using TinyUmbrella and the default options
  • Someone restored that device with Cydia in the hosts pointing to gs.apple.com
  • Someone jailbroke the device and pressed ‘Make my life easier’

That’s it folks. Sorry to be a buzzkill but there was much confusion about this issue and many blog posts that simply didn’t give the full story of what exactly was going on.

New Features TinyUmbrella Update

Semaphore the developer of TinyUmbrella is working on a huge update for his famous program that lets you backup your shsh blobs. TinyUmbrella frees you from Apples controlling actions and lets you restore to any firmware you want if you use the program correctly. For a list of upcoming features:

● Device History: TinyUmbrella will remember device information of devices that have connected so that saving SHSH’s for those devices in the future no longer requires you to connect the device.
● Save All SHSH’s Available “On-File” at Cydia: TinyUmbrella will now automatically check Cydia for ALL SHSHs for the connected device (or device from history :) )
● TinyUmbrella will also help you detect what application is running on your computer that is taking up port 80 and will give you the option to kill that application. This should help many of you that don’t know what application may be listening on port 80 (ie. Skype)
● TinyUmbrella will also tell you what firmware versions you can safely downgrade or restore to whenever you connect the device (or select a device from history)
● TinyUmbrella will be sporting a cleaner UI based on some of the great suggestions from @chpwn (a friend and fellow chronic dev team associate)
● Support for PowerPC and more stable runtime for folks having problems running TinyUmbrella for odd and various reasons.

Long term plans include:

● Activation Support: I’ve started looking into the way the phone requests (and obtains) activation from apple’s servers. I’m confident I can duplicate this process but I have more investigation as the the process is incredibly complicated.
● Full Restore Support without iTunes: I’m looking at implementing my own complete restore mechanism. I have not decided if I’ll directly use @p0sixninja’s libirestore or whether I’ll try to do something that hasn’t been done before… ie in java :)

Cydia: NotSpot Removes Spotlight Search In iOS

NoSpot is a new tweak in cydia that completely removes spotlight search on your iphone. This is great for those who have an iphone 3g and are stuck with that very slow iOS 4 performance. Removing spotlight from your iphone may help it run smoother and load up quicker.

It is highly recommended for iphone 3g users to check this out if you don’t use spotlight. You can install this tweak free from cydia.

Cydia: Synchronicity Lets You Use i-Device While Syncing

Synchronicity is a great tweak that we’ve all been waiting for. Are you tired of syncing your iphone with itunes and not being able to use it since you have to wait for it to finish??

Fret no more Synchronicity is here, this cool tweak lets you use your iphone even while syncing with itunes. No more oops i forgot im syncing and canceling it because you want to use your phone or answer that call.

You can purchase Synchronicity from cydia for $2.00. I do warn you to not open your ipod app while using this tweak and syncing your i-device because it may corrupt your music library and we all hate restoring.

Synchronicity Description:

Requires iOS v4.0 or higher.

Use your device while it syncs with iTunes!

Synchronicity gives you the option to use your device during an iTunes sync. Instead of being stuck at the lock screen while you transfer new content, you can unlock, run apps, make calls, etc. You can do whatever you want, except run the Music app, which is disabled during syncs to prevent data corruption.

Synchronicity works on any device with firmware 4.0 or 4.0.1.

Though overall performance is virtually unaffected, you may notice slight lag in certain resource/CPU-intensive operations.

Jailbreakme v2.0

Jailbreakme v2.0 was a great success, and it’s provided a nice leveling point for all jailbreakers and unlockers on all devices at firmware versions less than 4.0.2/3.2.2.  We hope that everybody ever interested in jailbreaks or unlocks was able to join in on the jailbreakme bonanza.  Those of you who had Cydia capture your SHSH blobs, or those of you who captured them locally, will always be able to benefit from the jailbreakme.com v2.0 release. Congratulations!

Now it’s a few weeks later, and Apple has closed the jailbreakme.com hole.  They’re shipping devices with FW 4.0.2/3.2.2, impervious to this particular jailbreak.  So now, people will begin to ask: will there be a jailbreak for devices that shipped with 4.0.2/3.2.2, out of the box?

No, there won’t be.  FW 4.0.2/3.2.2 was *only* released to fix the jailbreakme hole.  With FW 4.1 still in its beta stages, it makes no sense to escalate the “cat & mouse” with Apple for FW updates that only fix the jailbreak holes. To quote WOPR, “the only winning move is not to play”.

If the cat & mouse game escalates too quickly, especially during beta FW periods, nobody but Apple benefits.  For this reason, there won’t be a 4.0.2/3.2.2 jailbreak specifically during the period where 4.0.2/3.2.2 is the latest public release.  At best, some future 4.1x FW jailbreak *may* be compatible with 4.0.2/3.2.2 (but don’t count on that).

If any of this is confusing, please ask below in our comments section!

P.S.: For those of you with iPhone3G or iPod Touch 2G(not MC version), it’s true you can always use redsn0w to jailbreak your 4.x devices.   Don’t let that dilute the above message, though :)

iMovicha: Free IM, Voice, Video Calls Via 3G/Wifi For Smartphones

iMovicha lets you IM, make free voice calls and video calls over 3G and/or WiFi and it works on iPhones, Android, Symbian, WinMo devices, Blackberry and Mac /Windows computers. So, if you have an iPhone and 3G/WiFi connectivity , you can IM, voice call/video call your buddy who’s owning an iPhone, an Android, Symbian, WinMo, Blackberry device or a Mac/Windows.

iMovicha key features:

  • Video calling
  • Voice calling
  • IM
  • Presence group management
  • Contact management
  • Preference Management

If you are using an Android based device, you will find the application in the market, but iPhone users will need to jailbreak the device and get the app from Cydia.

Esthetically the app is horrible, over 3G ( this may vary ) the video/audio quality is absolutely unbearable and the desktop clients are not very stable. Non the less, this is a promising start and we hope the developers will continue the development and make this app suitable for an iPhone.

You can find iMovicha in Cydia for free via BigBoss repo…
